Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Aprilaire register and grille cleaning in Austin typically runs $12 – $28 per register when done as part of a full duct cleaning, and we complete most whole-home jobs the same day we start. If your registers are coated in gray fuzz, streaked with dust trails, or you’ve noticed airflow feels weaker in one room, the grilles themselves are usually the visible half of a larger build-up inside the ducts feeding them.

Most Austin homeowners notice the problem when they wipe a register and the rag comes back black, or when they hold a tissue near a vent and watch it barely flutter. What you’re seeing is the exit point of a system that’s been circulating Hill Country dust, pollen, and construction debris through every room. The register is where it all becomes visible, but the cleaning has to reach deeper than the faceplate to matter.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire grilles and registers appear across their residential air cleaner and ventilation lines, including the 5000, 4000, and 2000 series air purifiers, plus the 8100 and 8120 ventilation systems. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Aprilaire uses both standard 4″×10″, 4″×12″, and 6″×12″ register footprints and proprietary mounting collars on their filter-base and ventilation models. You can’t swap a big-box register onto an Aprilaire filter cabinet collar without an adapter or gap.
We always verify the stamped model number on the back of the grille or on the cabinet label before matching anything. Aprilaire stamps their part numbers on the back lip of most residential grilles, but after years of Texas heat, that stamp can fade to nothing. When that happens, we measure the opening, the screw spacing, and the collar depth. Aftermarket equivalents from trade suppliers fit most standard Aprilaire openings fine and cost 30 – 40% less than OEM, but for Aprilaire’s flush-mount and magnetic-catch grilles, we recommend staying with OEM because the aftermarket molds rarely seat flush. Linden Air Duct Austin is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with Aprilaire, just familiar with how their parts wear in Central Texas homes.

Signs Your Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning Is Falling Behind
- Visible dust trails on walls or ceiling around the register. This is particle-laden air escaping around a partially blocked grille. The register itself is restricting flow enough that air is carving around the edges and painting the drywall with whatever’s in the duct.
- Gray or black fuzz on the grille fins. In Austin, this fuzz is usually a mix of dust, pet dander, and the fine limestone powder that drifts off construction sites throughout Travis and Williamson counties. It builds on the fins first because that’s where air velocity drops just enough for particles to settle.
- Rooms that heat or cool unevenly. A register caked with debris can cut airflow by 20 – 30% before you consciously notice it. Your thermostat reads fine, but one bedroom always feels five degrees off because its register is effectively running at half capacity.
- Musty or stale smell when the blower kicks on. Austin’s humidity plus organic dust trapped on register surfaces is a fairly reliable recipe for odor. The smell often fades after the system runs a few minutes, which tricks you into thinking it’s not the ductwork. It usually is.
- Clicking or rattling from the grille during operation. Debris accumulation can unbalance the damper behind the register, or the grille’s mounting clips loosen as the metal expands and contracts through Texas summer-to-winter swings. The noise is the register telling you it hasn’t been touched in a long time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Austin homeowners, cleaning registers and grilles alone runs $12 – $28 per register, with most homes having 8 – 14 total. Whole-system duct cleaning that includes every register and grille typically falls between $450 and $900 depending on home size, system complexity, and how long since the last cleaning. The range moves on three things: the number of registers, whether the system has flex duct or rigid metal (flex tears more easily and takes more care), and the depth of build-up inside the main trunk lines.
Every quote includes removal of each grille, cleaning of both sides, cleaning of the visible duct opening, and re-seating the grille with new screws if the old ones are stripped. Marcus Veale and our crew write the price down before any work begins, and we don’t change it at the door. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every cleaning we do: if the work isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely remove a standard screw-mounted register and wipe the faceplate with a damp cloth. You can also vacuum the first few inches of the duct opening with a shop vac. That’s where the safe, useful DIY work ends. The problem is that registers are the visible endpoint of duct runs that extend 20, 30, sometimes 50 feet into unconditioned attics. By the time the register looks dirty, the duct behind it is carrying significantly more than you can reach by hand.

What you should not do is push a vacuum hose deep into a flex duct, especially older Aprilaire-connected runs. Flex duct inner liners tear easily, and a torn liner in an Austin attic pulls 140-degree air into your system all summer. We use negative-pressure extraction with Rotobrush and Nikro equipment to pull debris from the full duct run without damaging the liner. If you’ve cleaned the visible register and airflow still feels weak, the issue is almost always deeper in the run. Call (940) 461-7203 and we’ll scope the system and show you exactly what we find before anything gets cleaned.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, every 3 – 5 years is the realistic window for a full register and duct cleaning, and sooner if you have pets, live near active construction, or have allergy-sensitive family members. Homes within a few miles of new development in areas like Mueller, East Riverside, or the 130 corridor often need cleaning closer to the 3-year mark because of the constant fine dust.
Bent fins can usually be straightened, and stripped screw holes can be re-tapped with a larger screw. But cracked plastic housings, failed damper mechanisms, or corroded metal grilles are almost always better replaced than repaired, because the repair rarely outlasts the labor cost. We’ll show you the damage and give you the honest call either way.
For a typical 2,200 – 2,800 square foot Austin home with 10 – 14 registers, a full register and duct cleaning takes 4 – 6 hours. Registers-only cleaning takes under an hour. We quote the time before we start and stick to it.
Yes, our trucks carry standard Aprilaire grille sizes in white and almond, along with OEM-compatible replacements for most 5000, 4000, and 2000 series filter bases. If your model needs a specific finish or uncommon size, we source it and return to install, usually within a few days. We also work with registers and grilles from Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems, so a mixed-brand house is no problem.
Tell me what the system is doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs – no upsell, no alarm, just the straight answer.
